Biography

Baris Azman was born in The Netherlands in 1979 from Turkish parents.

He graduated at the St. Joost Arts Academy in Breda in 2003 with his short film EFENDI (English translation: Mister), which premiered at the Dutch Film Festival and went on to play several film festivals. His film IT HASN’T HAPPENED YET (2005) won the special Jury Prize at the Dutch NPS short film competition of 2005 and played at the VERSIONFEST 06 film festival in Chicago.

Aside from still making short films of his own, he has worked as a screenwriter on the film BELHUIS (PHONEHOUSE) for production company PICOS DE EUROPA, located in Rotterdam. He has also collaborated with director Harrie Verbeek on his first feature screenplay ALTER EGO, which was awarded a grant by the Dutch FILM FONDS and participated in the BINGER FILMLAB.

Consequently, he was asked by production company IDEE-FIXE in Breda, The Netherlands, to make a series of short films for a local television channel. These were made in exchange for use of film equipment and editing facilities. Part-time he has written for the international magazine YDN (Young Designers Network), where he wrote articles on films and conducted interviews with filmmakers on festivals (e.g. International Film Festival Rotterdam).

In 2008 his screenplay HARDWARE STORE was selected as the best Dutch screenplay, by NISI MASA NL/MeccaPANZA. Together with this screenplay he was asked to participate at the 2009 SCRIPT & PITCH workshop of NISI MASA, which was held at the Moulin D’Ande in France. The finished product was presented to producers at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival.

His first feature film; THE MAN WHO GOT LOST is currently in development stages. It was awarded financing by the Province of Brabant, The Netherlands for script development and was selected for MakersVoorMakers (MakersForMakers), an initiative of the BINGER FILMLAB and the Dutch Film Festival. The film has been picked up by production company Lagestee Film BV.

Recently he has been active as a lecturer on screenwriting for students of different ages (young adults at the Film By The Sea Festival and International Film Festival Breda) and adult students (teaching at the St. Joost Arts Academy for 3rd and 4th year students). Since 2010 he’s also an advisor voor subsidising applications concerning ‘new media’ projects at the Cultural Participation Fund (encouraging people to engage in the arts and culture themselves).

He is currently developing the feature film NIGHTSHOP KISMET with Lagestee Film BV.

Baris Azman werd geboren in Eindhoven in 1979 en is van Turkse afkomst. Hij is in 2003 aan de St. Joost Akademie in Breda afgestudeerd met de korte fictie film EFENDI (Turks voor ‘Meneer’).  Deze ging in première op het Nederlands Film Festival (en werd gekozen als één van de tien beste eindexamenfilms van dat jaar). Verscheidene festivals volgde. Zijn film IT HASN’T HAPPENED YET (2005), won een speciale Jury vermelding van de NPS Korte Film competitie en draaide o.a. op het Versionfest film festival in Chicago.

Apart van het verder maken van zijn eigen korte films, heeft hij ook als scenario-schrijver van de speelfilm BELHUIS gewerkt voor producent Noud Heerkens. In samenwerking met regisseur Harrie Verbeek schreef hij de synopsis en treatment van ALTER EGO, waarvoor zij een bijdrage van het Nederlands Fonds Voor De Film hebben gekregen en wat als project participeerde in het Binger Filmlab.

Vervolgens werd hij gevraagd door Stichting Idee-Fixe in Breda, om een serie korte fictie films te draaien. Deze werden in ruil voor camera- en montage apparatuur gedraaid. Part-time heeft hij ook geschreven voor het internationale magazine YDN, waar hij verslag deed over film festivals en interviews hield met speelfilm-regisseurs (zoals op het International Film Festival Rotterdam).

In 2008 werd het scenario HARDWARE STORE verkozen tot beste Nederlandse scenario door NisiMasa NL/ MeccaPANZA. Samen met het scenario participeerde Baris in de Script & Pitch workshop van NisiMasa, gehouden aan de Moulin D’Ande in Frankrijk. Vervolgens werd het eindproduct gepresenteerd aan producenten op het Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival.

Zijn eerste lange speelfilm; THE MAN WHO GOT LOST is momenteel in ontwikkeling. Het project kreeg financiering van de Provincie Brabant voor scenario ontwikkeling en werd geselecteerd voor MakersVoorMakers. (een initiatief van het Binger Filmlab en het Nederlands Fonds voor de Film, in samenwerking met het Nederlands Film Festival.) De film heeft een producent; Lagestee Film BV.

Sinds kort is hij ook actief als docent ‘scenario’, voor verschillende leeftijdsgroepen (jongeren voor Film By the Sea Festival en International Film Festival Breda) en studenten (docent aan de St. Joost akademie voor 3^e en 4^e jaar studenten) en treed sinds 2010 op als adviseur voor aanvragen ‘nieuwe media’ bij het Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie (gericht op amateur kunstenaars en samenwerkings projecten).

Hij is momenteel de speelfilm NIGHTSHOP KISMET aan het ontwikkelen met Lagestee Film BV.
